Sundial Sculptures
Sundial Sculptures are a public artwork of four figurative forms installed in the grounds of the Questacon national science and technology centre, Canberra.
ES designed and constructed each figurative element to gesture a visual play of time. The conceptual approach in the selection of the figurative forms was drawn from a kinaesthetic narrative of age and time passing. Number shadows created by the complex shapes of each ‘Fundial’ sculpture converge to communicate specific times of the day – young girl with a balloon (10am), teenage boy performing a hand stand (12pm), middle-aged woman in yoga pose (2pm) and elderly man with walking cane (4pm). Each shadow number is only visible for a limited period, reinforcing the ephemeral nature of time.
